N’Sync - Celebrity
I know you gay boys love a boy band, so
I’m sorry to be the bearer of Bad
News, but I think we are at the
beginning of the end of the boy bad
phenomenon. With A.J. from the
Backstreet Boys in rehab, rumors of 98 °
going their separate ways and the
release of N’Sync’s new CD, Celebrity
– all signs of a party gone bad.
Unlike the groundbreaking,
chart-popping N’Sync album No
Strings Attached, their latest
effort falls way short of creative
expectation. I was so eager to hear the
new material because I loved their
previous album. It was fun, energetic
and pure pop. Confession: I’m a
closeted boy band fan. But excitement
quickly changed to disappointment as I
listened to the first track,
"Pop", an attitude, break
beat, singy rap song. As I
fast-forwarded I couldn’t find one
redeeming quality. I attribute this to
several reasons:
- These boys started taking
themselves way too seriously. They
obviously lost sight of what
"boy band" stands for. Fun
lyrics with little substance and
expensive videos with their shirts
off.
- This project probably looked
better on paper because it was
executed with no direction. Most of
the songs were written by Justin
Timberlake – bad idea!!! This
young man must be still stuck in
adolescence, video games, puppy love
and baggy clothes. He should stick
to singing and leave penmanship to
his band mate J.C. because the
lyrics are below no substance –
"Dirty pop, baby, baby you can’t
stop. I know you like this dirty
pop." Give me a break! Can’t
we come up with something better
than that?
- Every song sounds exactly like the
one before; the music has no depth
or range. Even hot producers Rodney
Jenkins (J-Lo, Whitney Houston,
Spice Girls) couldn’t bring any
life to this band. The title track
"Celebrity" is a far cry
from his usual musical talents –
it’s weak! Bad choice of
producers, which include Brian
McKnight, B.T., Max Martin and Rip
Rock.
One step backward for N’Sync. A
one-eighty from the boys who sold two
million CDs of their last album in one
week. This disc was a rush product and
it shows. N’Sync should have taken a
little more time to release something
that expresses and represents their
growth as artists. There is no
commitment to this album from the
Fabulous Five. You get the sense they
didn’t believe what they were singing.
In turn, the singing is bad and they
rely on special effects and vocal
enhancers to mask their lack of
conviction.
N’Sync’s Celebrity is a
"Pop Flop". Let’s hope they
learn from this experience and put out
some good ole fashioned boy band,
catchy, fun, feel-good music next time.
If indeed there is a next time!
