As if you couldn’t guess, MOD is a trip into Modern American Cuisine that begins from the moment you walk through the door. The décor is very modern, making use of colorful geometric shapes that demand attention, but don’t take the focus away from the clientele. Seating in the dining room is tight. The majority of the tables are either grouped along a long booth-type setting or are tall swivel-stools that share a curving high counter top. Though not the place for a quiet table for two, the setting is more than appropriate for the hip crowd that packs the house. Whether you like the décor or not, the food will keep you coming back for more. This is where MOD and the talented Chef Kelly Courtney, formerly of Okno, shine the best. Highlights of the menu include the black mussels appetizer, seasoned with salt and other herbs, the portion is enough for two. The beet and goat cheese salad is divine as are the tempura-fried green beans. You’ll find it difficult not to fill-up trying the appetizers and salads, but any of the entrée’s will certainly take you over the top. Most impressive is the Texas Truck Stop ribeye steak, served with mushrooms and a fondue of English Stiliton cheese with Vidalia onions. The duck and rack of lamb are seasoned and prepared to please even the most discriminating palette. The dessert of choice is the huge MOD tropical split, made with bruleed bananas, passion fruit ice cream, coconut gelato, macadamia nut brittle and passion fruit caramel sauce. The service at MOD is attentive and the staff are well versed in the composition of the interesting dishes. The attention to detail that went into the design of the restaurant has certainly carried over to the kitchen and wait staff. What could possibly be wrong with a restaurant with great service and incredible food? Well, let’s just say you have to take MOD with a grain of salt. If you don’t like getting seated more than thirty minutes past your reservation or are not in the mood to be in a small space with a hip crowd and some attitude, you may be better off somewhere else. But grab some friends and make a night of it. Dress to impress, go for the early reservations, have some drinks and enjoy the experience.
