You won't hear much about new, unique
styles in fashion over the next several
months. Instead it's a slight
modification on themes from years past:
Brief Encounters-
Ladies, get ready to show off those legs
this spring! Not since the Pat
Benetar years has fashion embraced
micro-length skirts with such a
passion. The message this year, go
short. But fear not, you won't see
the hair-teased, thick eye shadow
"rock chick" walking down
Halsted street (except in drag of
course). This version of the mini
is about a sexy, practical in-your-face
rebelliousness. It's more about
what you decide to throw around your
shoulders that can change the same mini
from something you'd wear to the grocery
store to something ready for partying.
The Eyes Have It -
"Cats" may have closed, but
the glasses are back. The fifties
return with a new attitude. Styles
range from jet black, long and narrow
(Dolce Gabbana) to artistic pink
versions (Versus). Don't look for
knockoffs on the counter at Walgreens
anytime soon. Even New Yorkers are
still hesitant about how well this
revival will go over.
You're In The Army Now-
Here's one for everybody, military is
back. For the men,
epaulettes, distressed, beaten, boiled
and gunshot fabrics, lean and strict
silhouettes and heavy boots are all on
the front line. Camouflage is the hot
new print; medals replace sovereigns.
For the women, it's more about the khaki
color and the use of subtle uniform
details. This isn't the Janet
Jackson "Rhythm Nation" look,
but a more soft approach to elements of
military dress.
