Dream -  It Was All A Dream

Despite the fact that this is a manufactured group, despite the fact that these girls were signed to Bad Boy Entertainment label (a Sean "Puffy" Combs joint), I decided to give Holly, Diana, Melissa, and Ashley the benefit of the doubt.

I must say the electronic intro caught my attention – even though they say their name like 12-year-olds would say "Mommy". Then came the first single, "He Loves You Not", a pop delight packed with a tight hook and a danceable groove. This Expose-sounding track got me up and dancing. I remember hearing it on the radio and thinking that it was Christina Aguilera. I was glad to find it was not. The sound has mass-appeal that will take it to the top. The electric guitar breakdown rocks. I thought to myself, "This isn’t so bad." But not much came after that. Several attempts, but no prize.

"This Is Me" and "What We Gonna Do About Us?" came close, but all the songs seem to sound the same or sound like something that we’ve already heard. With producers like Vincent Herbert (Toni Braxton) and Steve Kipper (RuPaul) you would expect something innovative. Even the Sean "Puffy" Combs produced remake of the classic song "Mr. Telephone Man" fell short of the mark.

These girls have the potential to be one-hit wonders. Dream are no Spice Girls – though they are said to have very distinct personalities, it doesn’t come through on this debut album. Their voices often sound the same and very rarely do they harmonize. Though they are cute, I doubt that that will be enough to make Dream what the record label hype has called "the new sensation".
