Daft Punk
Discovery

Every year a song comes along and restores our faith in music, forcing us to continue to believe that there are still a few creative artists out there.

Once a year an anthem is born. No matter where you are – whether it’s in the car, the gym or a dance club – when you hear those familiar chords you smile and your body is surged with a burst of energy, leaving you in a wave of emotional nostalgia. Though you’ve only heard the song once or twice, it sounds like an old friend and you want to get up and dance with him.

That song for the Year 2001 is Daft Punk’s "One More Time". A crafty electronic dance tune fused with a disco vibe. It’s fun…it’s energy…it’s one HOT track!!!

Daft Punk are Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, who met while attending school in Paris in 1987. By 1992, heavily influenced by the Beach Boys, they recorded songs under the name "Darling". Melody Makers described their efforts as a "bunch of daft punk", which depressed the pair, but unwittingly gave them a name for their next product. Soon came the birth of "Homework", the Daft Punk debut album, which gained them underground popularity. "Homework" was heavy on the electronica, with a raw edge and styles ranging from synth pop to hyper house, to heavy metal and disco.

On their sophomore album Daft Punk wanted to add a ‘more emotional dimension’ to their sound. ‘Making 10-minute tracks with one idea is something we’ve done a lot’, Bangalter said, referring to the duo’s fondness for minimalism. ‘Here we wanted to make a three minute track with 40 ideas.’ And that they accomplished – the result is "Discovery".

This dance duo has presented us with our summer CD. The album is futuristic pop with an old school flavor. In the song "Aerodynamic" you can feel the sounds of disco in the melody. The harmonies will seduce you and the beat will carry you straight to the dance floor.

There are many highlights on this "3-years in the making" CD. Another one of my favorites is "Digital Love". It sounds like an old Bee Gees song, but it is infectious from the first note to the vocoder voice, to the entire production of it. You will listen and feel like driving in your car with the top down.

Daft Punk are not big on lyrics, but they make up for it in feeling. This is a feel good CD, packed with emotional frequencies. Check out the cuts "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Too Long" (a true house cut). They cleverly bring 70’s and 80’s vibes into the new millennium. We haven’t had this much fun since Eiffel 65 brought us "Blue".

Daft Punk has made an intriguing album that explores a fresh musical spectrum. It embodies dance tracks, chill out, down tempo relaxation tracks, and much more. This experimental landscape is a true "Discovery".
