Stevie Nicks - "Trouble
in Shangri-La"
Trouble in Shangri-La brings Stevie back into the pop arena, which is flooded with boy bands and rap groups. Though she could have made a sappy comeback album produced by a hot new mainstream producer, Stevie opted to continue to rock. She enlisted long time friend Sheryl Crow to lend a hand – Sheryl sings and plays on six tracks, CO-produced five and wrote one. Trouble in Shangri-La comes with many surprises – Guest performances by Macy Gray, Sarah McLachlan, and the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, even ex-boyfriend and front man of Fleetwood Mac, Lindsay Buckingham plays lead guitar on a track. Trouble in Shangri-La is the sequel to her 1994 CD, "Street Angel" – with poetry of witchcraft, lost love, hope, and transcendental enchantment, we find Stevies haunting voice singing, "I’m something of a Dreamer." This self-exclamation is a perfect theme for this CD. Steve is committed to this album. Her passion is in every harmony, the depth of her soul is in every lyric – you will find yourself rocking out to this fairytale. The bond between Stevie and Sheryl is musically conveyed. Sheryl re-creates Stevie's sound to make it a bit more accessible to the younger generation. But never clouding Stevies windswept imagery. On songs like "That Made Me Stronger." Stevie shows us that she still has it. Other songs that stand out are Planet of the Universe, and Bombay Sapphires, where Stevie brilliantly dabbles with electronic sounds and dreamlike keyboards. The radio ready first single from the CD is not a source to judge this piece of work. Everyday is heavy on the pop side, with a catchy hook, melting strings and melodic groove. Check out the title track – Trouble in Shangri-la to feel the spell casting charisma of this siren. Most of the track is
worthy of listening to over and over.
Even the not so strange ones are good
too. So, run out and get yourself a
copy. You will not be sorry that you
bought this CD. Shangri-La may be just
what Stevie needs to bridge that
generation gap and land her back on the
pop charts.
