Natalie Imbruglia - White Lilies Island The Aussie-born, ex-soap opera star turned pop singer has returned to prove she is no one-hit wonder. I know you are probably saying, ‘Who is she?’ Well, Natalie Imbruglia brought us the unforgettable smash-hit "Torn" from her debut album Left To Middle. Natalie took the pop world by storm in the late 90’s, but like most storms it quickly blew past, leaving just the smallest reminder that it was ever there. Not much was heard from Natalie after 1998, despite the endless awards and the millions of records she sold. Many rumors surrounded her disappearance from the music business. Some said she couldn’t handle the fame and had a "Mariah Carey" before Mariah had a "Mariah Carey". Other believed she had very little talent and had trouble meeting the expectations of the record company’s follow-up demands. Natalie denies all rumors, stating, ‘I didn’t take time off, it’s just taking me this long to make the album I wanted to make. It was blood, sweat and tears, and thank you for being patient.’ Whatever the truth may be, I don’t think we were being patient – I just think we forgot about her. My expectations of this album borderlined skeptic and intrigue. Usually nothing good comes from a pop artist who takes three years to record a follow-up album. It took me several listens to appreciate White Lilies Island because I had to let go of the expectations. Once I let go I was able to feel the vibe of this CD. The first single, "Wrong Impression", picks up where "Torn" left off. It’s a pop-rock-electronica tune with sweet vocals, acoustic guitar and catchy lyrics. Just like "Torn", it’s a declaration of what love does to you, and also like "Torn", it sticks in your head and you find yourself playing air guitar and singing along with it. The twelve new tracks of White Lilies Island are not much different from the twelve tracks from her debut album Left To Middle. If you played both CDs on random you wouldn’t know which song came from which disc. It’s the sequel album. Nonetheless, White Lilies Island is a good pop rock album, complete with poetic songs of love, faith and inspiration. Check out the song "Sunlight", a sheer showcase of her talent. Even the mid-tempo "Butterflies" is a worthy credit to her musical intuition. White Lilies Island may not be the international commercial success that Left To Middle was, but that’s due mostly to fans having moved on since we last heard from Natalie. And the whole rocker-chic thing is kinda out right now. If Natalie Imbruglia would have released this CD two years ago it would have been a smash hit. But she didn’t, so Natalie will be forever remembered as a one-hit wonder.
